Bears fall to Rusk in regional opener in Bear Park
The Gladewater Bears lost 7-2 to the Rusk Eagles in the first game of a best two of three regional title series at Bear Park. Sophomore Pat Richey earned the win with a four hitter. Emmett Lockett took the loss to drop to 12-2. The Bears travel to Rusk Thursday for a 4 p.m. contest with a potential deciding game Friday at Tyler's Robert E. Lee High School park.

Pet rocks craze maker strikes it rich in 90 days
Gary Dahl of Los Gatos California built a nationwide pet rock fad earning about 1 million dollars in 90 days. The 39 year old father of three left unemployment after selling simple rocks for four dollars each. He says anyone can do the same at the right time.

Free tutoring program announced for Gladewater youth
A dozen Gladewater High School students will tutor younger pupils in a federally funded Youth Teaching Youth program directed by Miss Rachael Bynum. Beginning June 14 at Gladewater Middle School, kindergarten to sixth grade students may enroll with no cost. Registration runs June 7-12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a guardian present. The eight week program runs daily 8 a.m. to noon and aims to help with any subject.

Four arrested after speed pursuit in Gladewater incident
Police pursued a speeding motorcycle driven by Robert Hudgins and his wife Vivian Hudgins on US 271. James Smith and Ruby Ann Smith allied with them and barricaded in a house, prompting tear gas and arrests of four suspects. Hudgins h a d excessive speed charge and post ed bond. Chief Banks sustained a cut during the arrest.

Raymond Allen Elected Chairman of Gladewater Hospital Board
Raymond Allen was elected chairman of the Gladewater Municipal Hospital board at the May session. David Holcombe as vice chair and John Osteen as secretary treasurer were also chosen. The meeting approved bills and accounts, reappointed medical staff, added Michael McArthur, M.D., to the medical staff, and amended byways for the Hospital Auxiliary while hearing its annual report. Carson Kennedy asked to withdraw his resignation to restore full strength. Gordon Mayer and Holcombe were reappointed to three year terms.
