In Common Pleas Court Wilbur J. Taylor of Burton township seeks to close the only refuse and garbage dump serving Geauga County and alleges the operation by John B. Holmes is a nuisance harming nearby property values. Holmes defends the method saying earth covering seals odors and vermin and that the disposal area is distant from homes and screened by woods.

Chardon council session at Thrasher House discussed meter enforcement with about 30 merchants. Some urged leniency for short meter violations while others favored strict ticketing. the special policeman’s appointment was approved and bids for Thrasher House repairs were opened.

Two Officers to Attend P. T. A. Convention

Red Cross Workers to Meet in Geauga County

All Geauga County Red Cross Blood Program workers are urged to attend a meeting on Wednesday September 17 at 2 30 p m at Claridon Town Hall. Dr William Geohegan and staff from the Cleveland Regional Blood Center will honor Mrs F W Klingemier Blood Program chairman and volunteers behind the program. Plans for next Blood Mobile visits in Geauga include Chardon October 16 and Burton October 17.

Early polio cases reported in Geauga county

Late reports list several new polio victims including Betty Wengerd age 20 months and Ari Miller age 4 of Huntsburg along with Fannie Schrock age 10 and Ada Schrock age 8 of Burton. David Miller of Parkman and 27 year old Don Tinscher golf pro at Chardon Lakes are noted victims.

Harry Dilley of Chardon pleaded guilty to assault and battery against his wife before Justice Charles Hall. He was fined 150 dollars with 100 suspended and received a suspended 30 day jail term.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Barbara Ann Eland who died Saturday at Lakeside Hospital Cleveland. Born February 22 1952 in Chard she was daughter of Edward and Virginia Eland of Kiwanis Lake Newbury. Geauga County grand jury returned three indictments this week. James Franey 18 of Henderson Ky and a juvenile face charges for breaking into the Zimmerman home on Butter Nut Road Munson Township and stealing a pair of binoculars valued at 115 dollars. Jay Otto Beyer Thompson must stand trial for manslaughter in the traffic death of Dorothy Ruth Posante of Cleveland. William E Woods of Cleveland is indicted for drunk driving and carrying a revolver after a police chase and tavern disturbance last May 25. The panel dismissed a non support complaint against Robert Pomp of Geneva.

School Board Hosts Teacher Welcome Dinner in Chardon

The Chardon Board of Education hosted a noon open house dinner for the Chardon Teachers Association and school staff in the district cafeteria. Loretta Mae Holmes chaired as toastmistress with guests including Frank Schofield and Uno Urpi. The event featured a large wishing well centerpiece, student-made favors, and group singing led by Anna Dunn.
