Cutting horse competition likened to hoops thrill at Beef Empire Days
Bruce Morine, judge for the Beef Empire Days cutting horse event at Finney County Fairgrounds, compares cutting to basketball defense. The sport pits riders against a herd as they cut a calf and herd it to a pen within 2 1/2 minutes on a dirt arena. Scores range from 60 to 80 with a starting 70, judged by outsiders to ensure fairness. Horses, highly valued at about $25,000, are the primary athletes as riders guide them. The competition features four divisions Friday and 15 more entries across Saturday and Sunday, highlighting a family sport with riders of all ages.
