Judge Dr. Mark Johnson presided over 196 cattle in the 2002 Beef Empire Days Live Show weighing finalists to 30 steers and 19 heifers. Cowboys guided cattle into the arena as Johnson explained his selections for muscular, well conditioned animals and highlighted the competitive field.
More than 100 spectators at the Finney County Fairgrounds grandstand judged 10 heifers and steers to assess quality and yield grade while an earlier live show featured 196 animals. Judges and participants discussed the challenge of predicting carcass traits and prizes were awarded for top animals including grand champion heifer tag 588 Sublette Feeders and grand champion steer tag 191 CSA Cattle Co Scoti.
Elizabeth Miller a 90 year old grand and great grandmother described as a persistent cowgirl attends Beef Empire Day events solo driving herself to the Live Show and planning more activities. She recalled past BBC involvement with her late husband and wrote for The Telegram in the 1930s during the dust storms while growing up near Friend Kansas. She still travels 23 miles weekly to Prairie View Church and plans to attend a Roto-Mix barbecue and Buffalo Bill performance on Thursday.
