Fred Kuntzsch II, honored tonight at City Hall, helped rescue six people after a boat capsized at Cedar Bluff Reservoir near WaKeeney. He and his wife Trudi, two sons, and others aided in darkness amid 40 mph winds and rough water during the June incident.
A storm system in southwest Kansas produced one tornado 14 miles north of Satanta and a funnel cloud 10 miles north of Holcomb on Saturday. No damage reported. Sirens in Garden City were sounded for safety amid radar and spotter reports. Rainfall varied by location with hail reported in several towns as storms moved southeast toward Texas.
The 34th Beef Empire Days awards banquet closed the festival in the Plaza Hotel Grand Ballroom. Shawn Carlson called BED the Oscars of the beef industry and Alan Fankhauser praised the evening’s success as the industry faced current conditions. The ceremony honored the 2002 Live and Carcass Show heifer and steer winners and cattle working contest victors.
Garden City resident Harold Orosco hosts a talk show on a Spanish station addressing community topics. Diane Lewis reports that Orosco, who works with local groups, engages listeners with discussions on local concerns and public affairs.
Orosco, who works full time at the post office and holds a part time job, produces Issues and Debates a Spanish language program airing 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays. Guests include State Rep Ward Loyd Fire Chief Allen Shelton City Manager Bob Halloran and Police Chief Jim Hawkins. Alan Riedel director of the Garden City job service center is a regular. The host says the show is not issue oriented and has strong community response. He puts in 15 to 20 hours weekly.
