Harvest outlook improves for wheat despite reduced rainfall
In southwest Kansas some areas saw more rain through May yet totals lag last year. Montezuma, Lakin, Ulysses, and Healy reported rainfall below 2015 levels while hail remains a risk with forecasts for hot days in the 90s and potential triple digits. USDA-NASS projects 2016 Kansas wheat at 352.6 million bushels statewide, aided by higher yields but offset by less planted acreage. Wheat Quality Council forecasts about 48.6 bushels per acre, with NASS rating southern winter wheat 10 percent excellent and 60 percent good or better.
