Indianapolis wins American Legion HQ by salesmanship
Indianapolis delegates described a concerted campaign to win the American Legion permanent headquarters. They argued the city’s central location within two hours’ rail reach, strong transit, existing headquarters for unions, hotels, theaters, and civic buildings made it ideal. They highlighted Butler College pioneering coeducation, local industry and livestock figures, and cultural landmarks to persuade the convention.
