Velvet Beans Boost Soil Health For Poor Land
Velvet beans improve poor sandy soils by fixing nitrogen and increasing yields. Demonstrations in eastern counties show corn up 19 to 39 bushels per acre and seed cotton up from 1148 to 1745 pounds. beans raise peanut yields as well. For grazing, plant in alternation with corn or Biloxi soybeans, three feet apart, from September to spring. Varieties suitable for Bea Carolina include Early Speckle Osceola and Mississippi Black, planted by June 1 for best results. A bushel seeds two acres poor land or three acres good, at $1.50 to $2.50 per bushel.
