County Observes Annual Music Week Across Rutherford

Music Week continued with Friday night climax in Rutherford County as towns including Rutherfordton Henrietta Caroleen Vernon and Forest City showcased student performances and a Spin dale Band concert. County Superintendent C A Erwin addressed the audience and a central committee planned future celebrations with Kiwanis and local clubs assisting.

Cool Springs Township Schools Close May 30th

The Cool Springs Township schools plan to close on May 30 with a May 15 commencement and a May 25-30 schedule including a Baccalaureate, reading and declamation contest, and graduation. About fifty seniors are expected to graduate, marking the largest class in school history, with many students earning perfect attendance certificates.

Child Fatally Injured by Fall in Cotton Field

Alice Carley Bradley eleven daughter of Mr Bradley of this route died after falling from a moving fertilizer wagon. The wheels passed over her body as the wagon shifted near a stump while she helped in cotton planting. She died en route to the hospital. Funeral at Providence Methodist Church conducted by Rev Marion Blanton. Survived by father and brother Willard Bradley. pallbearers and flower girls named.

Officers Elected at Rutherford Country Club Meet

Rutherfordton May 6 at an enthusiastic meeting of Rutherford Country Club members officers for 1930 were elected. President G A Wil Spindale Secretary Dr A C Duncan Forest City Treasurer Don Melton Forest City Greens Committee M L Edwards R R Blanton Leslie Taylor G A Williams Dr A C Duncan. Don C Melton re elected greens keeper. Plans include course improvements likely a clubhouse showers and lockers. A clubbers tourney for beginners will be held soon and a low ball exhibition match today at 4 30 with Bill Goebel of Charlotte Country Club vs Dr A C Duncan R R Blanton and M L Edwards expected to draw large crowds. A small admission fee will be charged.

Barn and stock burned in Beason town

Caroleen May 7 A barn belonging to Ed Moore in Beason town burned Tuesday afternoon when struck by lightning. Moore lost one mule two cows one calf fodder forty bushels of corn and farming implements as the barn burned rapidly. Rain and lack of nearby buildings kept the fire from spreading despite no firefighting equipment.

Forest City Census Shows Rapid Population Gain

Census figures released by district six show Forest City with 4 062 residents, up 75.69 percent since 1920, with Forest City rivaling Canton Asheville and Hendersonville in western North Carolina. Detailed counts list races, twins, and local enumerators, noting 3 479 whites and 583 blacks, 1 592 in 1910 rising to 1960s totals, and listing farm counts and family interviews.

Prohibition Poll Shows City Votes In North Carolina

The Literary Digest poll reports Rutherfordton and Forest City backing strict enforcement of prohibition. Rutherfordton tallies 36 enforcement 16 modification 7 repeal, Forest City 79 enforcement 14 modification 11 repeal, with western towns totaling 2,107 enforcement 1,233 modification 1,42 repeal.

Henrietta Twin High School Commencement Plans

Commencement at Twin High School highlights a Sunday morning sermon on May 18 at 11:00 in the auditorium by Rev. J A Hunnicutt of Cliffside Baptist Church. Henrietta and Caroleen pastors join in the service, with Avondale’s pastor substituting at Cliffside. A large crowd is expected. The rest of the schedule runs May 21 senior exercises, May 22 graduation by Dr C Norton of Wofford College, and May 23 high school play, marking a record year.

Cool Springs to face Cliffside in Friday baseball clash

Cool Springs high school meets Cliffside Friday afternoon at 3 45 in a baseball game. New admission prices are 10 cents for ladies and pupils and 25 cents for men.

Local Legion Post To Meet Friday

The Willis Towery Post of the American Legion will hold a regular meeting in city hall next Friday evening May 9 at 8 oclock. The committee in charge expects to have string bands present and urges every member to attend for what is expected to be an unusually good meeting.

Superior Court Convenes Monday in Rutherfordton

The May term of superior court will convene Monday with Judge Oglesby slated to preside though designation may change. The term will focus on criminal trials with several notable cases, including at least two murder hearings expected.
