A reader reports on a rare gooseberry variety donated by Mrs Wm Sears. She notes the berries are larger than a cherry, unusually sweet, and the sample represents perhaps the best quality seen. The writer mentions Mrs Sears feels fortunate to possess this rare plant.
The notice corrects a prior report stating the price as seven dollars and fifty cents per cubic foot and clarifies it should be per cubic yard. The correction is issued to the council to prevent charges of extravagance.
A. H. Voegelein, after a year as assistant to Prof. Hoff at Humboldt schools, is elected superintendent of the Rule schools for the coming year. Falls City native, he is a young man advancing steadily toward a promising future.
When Wm Sears arrived at his second hand shop Monday morning he found entry had been gained and valuables stolen. The thief took cutlery and firearms including knives razors and revolvers totaling about 20 dollars. No suspects have been located yet.
Memorial day observances were held in the city for the Odd Fellows and A O U W lodges. Rev Mastin spoke at the Methodist church at 11 a m for the A O U W and Rev R Cooper Bailey at 2 30 p m for the S O U F s and Rebekah at the Presbyterian church. Cemetery rites followed with flowers placed on graves.
Officer Marts arrested James Moran of St. Joe after Moran dropped a shoe tag at Wm Sears second hand store. Sears recovered the tag revealing Moran as the thief who had stolen shoes from Cleveland & Sons. Moran hid an umbrella on his person, was jailed, and fined 19.60 after pleading guilty in police court. He faces jail meals and speculation of gang activity between Wymore and St. Joe.
Sam Bucher surprised readers on Monday by delivering a box of the best cherries yet seen. He owns two trees and camps under one each night with a shotgun, inviting neighbors to visit only at risk.
C H Heineman hustles to finish sidewalk projects as rain ends. He received five carloads of sidewalk material including sand and crushed rock. He also repairs the rear of his business building to store cement recently purchased and joined the market during a low point, handling twenty cars of cement.
Simonton and Pence expand Sunnyside greenhouse adding three 225100 square foot houses heated by steam doubling capacity. The improved facility aims to support growing shipping trade and large orders to nearby towns as they invest about 2500 in spring improvements, boosting the state's notable greenhouse.
O A Cooper traveled from Humboldt to meet his daughter Eva who returned from a three year stay in the Philippines where she taught. Eva toured the world and arrived in New York City met by Clema Rousek. They journeyed home via Chicago with a Eva relative. Upon arrival Humboldt held a grand welcome expressing joy at her safe return.
Chas. Hargrave went to Wyoming on Sunday and spent a few days with his wife and son who are visiting there.

Mary E Wiltse daughter of Mr and Mrs James Wiltse died at home in Rule Nebraska on Monday evening June 15 aged 6 years 6 months 21 days after a surgical operation failed to save her frail health. Funeral held at home June 17 at 2 p m conducted by Rev James C Shafer with many friends offering sympathy.
Levi Nedrow aged 2 years 5 months died at home June 17 1908 after a lingering illness. Born in Somerset County PA he moved to Carroll IL in 1854 later farmed near town. Survived by widow and 11 children eight living. He was a Brethren church leader and senior warden. Funeral at Brethren church tomorrow with all children expected to attend.
Mr. Bacakos and wife opened the Falls City Candy Kitchen a little over two years ago with minimal start up. The ice cream business has expanded prompting a ten gallon freezer and power ice crusher to meet wholesale orders. Ice cream now costs 25 cents per quart, a 15 cent savings. The candy kitchen is praised as perfect under Mr. Bacakos who oversees all steps from start to finish.
Miss Minnie Ruepge entertained the Kensington club of the German Lutheran church at her home Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Mary Firehaugh hosted the W R C Kensington group Monday afternoon. A 15 cent tea is planned by the Christian church ladies at Mrs. W L White's home next Thursday evening from five to eight. Miss Hazel Prater received a pleasant surprise Saturday evening with a few guests. Mr and Mrs Spears hosted K K club whist Friday evening with sixteen members present. Miss Margaret Horrocks hosted a small gathering for her birthday Monday with a four course six o'clock dinner. The Book Worm club met at the library Friday for a session on manners and customs of Japan with costumes and chop sticks. The club plans to meet again on a train morning to continue the study.
As Quimby Beaver and Will lowers were driving to town they met Chester Fisher driving a cow. The Wilson horse frightened, overturned the buggy, throwing occupants out. Beaver sustained slight bruises. no other injuries or major damage occurred. The runaway horse narrowly avoided several buggies including Frank Scraible and wife.
Highland’s squad hosts the visiting team for two games next week in a challenge to improve their present record. Games are slated for Monday and Tuesday at 2:30 at Poteet’s Ball Park to draw a large crowd.
The school board met Tuesday evening and awarded C J Heineman a contract for a concrete walk south of the high school to ease pedestrian traffic on Stone street. They also hired B Simonton to paint hallways and a room. The board approved locating a new stand pipe north of the high school and then adjourned after further business.
At a Saturday council meeting Falls City accepted equal shares of 12 500 from First National and Richardson County banks to fund a new electric light plant. Location chosen in the city park with a track switch from M I spur to save coal and supplies. The council adjourned after bond disposal and met again about Dor rington water works land offer of about five acres plus pipe and pole right of way for six acres totaling 1 750.
