The Hiawatha papers complain about the number of easy marks in Falls City. A stranger can come to the city with an advertising graft and solicit patronage from people who would not give five cents to a newspaper for legitimate advertising.
The Falls City Chautauqua runs August 7 to 16 with acclaimed speakers and a rich music lineup headlined by the Royal Hungarian Orchestra and Norton Chautauqua Orchestra Band. Senator J. P. Dolliver will open the event, with Midland Jubilee Singers and LaDeil Fox Imperial Concert Co. among featured acts. Plan now to attend.
R B Payne of Herman Nebr and Entertainers League of Indianapolis and Des Moines plans a six act winter lecture series. October features Sumner-Davis instrumental vocal duo followed by Totten the magician. Carter's Carolina Jubilee singers, Wiggam, and Wm Rainey Bennett to perform. Endorsements from Gov Van Sant and Senator LaFollette bolster hopes for a successful program. Get in line for the lecture course.
Among those who were court ing in Auburn during the week are Norman Musselman, Elmer Stoughton, J. R. Wilhite, John Hinton, J. L. Slocum, John More head, T. J. Whitaker and G. J. Crook and Jake Wissinger of Arago.
The Lincoln News reports a plan to employ convicts on Nebraska public roads under state and county control with possible U S government aid as an alternative to renewing the penitentiary labor contract with Lee Broom and Duster Co.
QO Parker foreman of the steel gang on the M P track near the depot lost a finger Wednesday afternoon while guiding a rail. A second rail was forcefully moved, severing the finger on the left hand.
On Saturday afternoon Bob Sweeney a mule buyer for Mr Williams stock man of Highland Kansas lost a valuable horse crossing a deep bottom south of town. The frightened team plunged and threw rider and buggy into water and mud. A Brackhahn boy swam to aid and freed one horse but the other could not be saved. The next day men with boats and ropes fastened the buggy hoping to recover it.
A Falls City artist Hank Wolfe painted a new advertising drop curtain for Gehling opera house. Wolfe, soon to begin a $700 scenic project in Hiawatha, is in high demand. Manager Gebling plans renovations and new attractions for the next theatrical season. Norman J. Sansom arrives from Decatur to spend vacation with N. B. Judd and wife, who raised and educate him.
Fourteen month old Neal Mulligan Jr. paid the year’s dog tax with his own money and now holds the papers granting Gold Dust the right to live. The event marks Mulligan as the first to settle the 1908 tax.
Citizens report three weeks of isolation due to muddy river bottoms. C H Heineman has urged Ernest M Pollard for help and federal support. Pollard offers material aid if county authorities cooperate and a government expert can assess feasibility of raising grades to clear high water barriers. Local business leaders urged to back the plan and urge immediate county action.
In an adjourned Friday session the council approved bills totaling 2117.72 and ordered warrants drawn on the water and light fund. C H Heineman of Omaha won the cement bridge contract at 365, while Joseph A Bortenlanger bid 7.50 per cubic foot for the water and light plant foundation, contingent on a 22000 bond. The clerk was told to notify him of contract conditions and start date. The sewer on 6th street will be extended from Jim Pickett’s residence to the hill. Plans for remodeling park house were to be prepared and bids invited. Water and light meters will be sold rather than loaned or rented. Water service may be cut for nonpayment after ten days’ notice. The council adjourned to Tuesday, June 4.
Nebraska City will host both the district conference and the Epworth League convention next week with about 125 attendees expected at each event. Brenton T. Badley of India will speak on India Monday night, as the League prepares Tuesday evening to begin.
Mrs B K Wiser died at her son Dr Wiser's home in Phoenix Arizona on Thursday after a brief illness caused by an apoplexy attack. The family had long lived in Verdon and she was a cousin of J L Slocum. funeral and interment were in Phoenix.
William Thompson seven months old, son of Mr and Mrs Tom Spence, died at the family home Wednesday morning in this city after a period of illness. Funeral services were held at the home Thursday at 5 PM conducted by Rev G Le Neide, with interment in Steele cemetery.
Thurston McCoy reports from the S S Georgia that his son, now an admiral's secretary, is busy with heavy duties in the 2nd division command. He will transfer to the S S Wisconsin as 2nd squadron commander and travel to the United States ahead of the first squadron. He expects to see home folks soon.
In south town a tent meeting draws crowds and praise but has suffered nightly interference by a few youths. Two offenders were arrested and jailed overnight and paid fines next morning. The state cream inspector reports 15 percent cream at the Candy Kitchen, one percent above the legal standard, aiding its growing business.
Florence Parden came back yesterday after a visit to Verden.
Mrs. Jon Nulk arrived in the city with her husband’s body after his death was announced earlier. The funeral from St. Thomas church was conducted by Rev Neide in the Episcopal service, with Masons conducting burial at the cemetery as the deceased was an honored Mason.
The Republican Congressional Committee announces a $150 prize for the best article on why the party should win next November. Submissions by July 15 to the Metropolitan Bank Building, Washington, D.C., with August 15 payment. Also notes Masonic lodge resolutions for John Nulk and local community updates from Falls City Nebraska.
Mr and Mrs Simon Davis hosted a small whist gathering Tuesday evening. The event offered a pleasant, sociable evening for the invited guests.
Mrs. John Trott hosted a six o clock dinner for eight in honor of Mrs. Harriet Abel. The City Federation of Women’s clubs planned a Saturday Elk Rooms meeting with hopes of large attendance. The St Thomas church Women’s Auxiliary met with Miss Meeker Cain to study Japan led by Mrs. Jus sen with assistants. Kensington Methodist hosted Guest Day at Mrs. Cameron’s with Stella Pattman and Herbert Hedges aiding. music by Cade Riechers and Mrs Cameron.
J. R. Cain Jr. of Stella was advanced this week in the Grand Lodge of Masons to the position of Grand Marshal. Miss Lora McCool of Dawson visits Dawson home of George Albright and family. An Odd Fellows lodge is to be instituted at Dawson next Tuesday evening.
