Notice to Dunkirk inhabitants that Walter Finkee Receiver of Taxes will collect the Deer Street Sewer Tax at City Hall from January 12, 1885. Payment accepted during the first thirty days with one percent extra per dollar and an additional one percent for any fraction. Dates and offices noted with legal holidays excluded.
Telegraph reports from Campwint Arizona Territory that ILateh led his command across ice on the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River toward the boomers still at Stillwater. Frost bite injuries to soldiers and teamsters are noted while General Hatch drives through nine feet of water and ice. The outcome hinges on whether the boomers abandon the camp.
A special National Leagues meeting in New York at the Fifth Avenue Hotel debated admitting Lucas of the St. Louis Unions. Delegates from major clubs listened to opposing views led by J. J. O Neill and von Der Ahe. After hours of discussion no decision was reached, a special committee was formed to work with the American Association to resolve the Lucas matter.

Joseph Fisher a rising young lawyer filed yesterday in Ottawa for slander against Mrs G B Pattee wife of a wealthy lumberman alleging 310000 in damages. He claims Mrs Pattee disliked him and urged his good friend to abandon him by spreading damaging stories which she repeated. Also notes Mrs Pattee later tied to Boston with her daughter.
In Washington on January 2 the Senate debated claims against the United States, Oklahoma terms, and a Court of Appeals bill tied to the David Davis measure. Discussions covered a Mississippi River bridge, Inter-State Commerce issues, and tributes to late Senator Anthony as the House moved through Indian Appropriation debates and Creek lands provisions.
January 22 report from St Louis describes the death of Wolfa Pickler a Russian Jewish peddler from cholera after ten days in the city. A second death, George W Evans a colored man, followed the same illness and was buried after discharge. Public spaces linked to Pickler were disinfected and officials ordered confirmation by doctors.
Ottawa January 92 It is feared that thirty laborers sent from Toronto last November to work on the Northern Railway between Callander and Gravenhurst have perished in the woods. An agent collected money for employment and the men, upon reaching Stoney Creek, found no sleighs and were abandoned by night. Six reached Callander, one man has been found, the rest are missing and presumed dead.
A Frenchman Louis Gougur, en route from Montreal to New York, jumped from a Passumpsic Railroad train in frigid conditions. Found alive at daybreak with hands and feet frozen, all extremities were amputated once he reached hospital. The case draws attention for his endurance amid severe injuries. Pennsylvania Editorial Association holds officers and sets committee for next excursion in Harrisburg. next summer's venue to be chosen by a committee.
The January dispatch from Camp reports General Wolseley’s victory near Metemneh, with 10,000 rebels and 2,000 dead or wounded. Colonel Burnaby killed, Lord St Vincent and Lord Airlie among the wounded, and Stewart’s forces holding after fierce hand to hand fighting. Supply shortages noted as water and food ran out.
