Notice to Dunkirk inhabitants that Walter Finkel, Receiver of Taxes, will collect taxes at his city office from 9 AM to 3 PM daily excluding Sundays and holidays, starting January 12, 1883. First thirty days taxed at 1 percent, plus 1 percent for each fraction of a year as provided by law.
By Telegraph Moorehead Bros. & Co storehouse and mill at Sharpsburg burned after a natural gas explosion. The office floor housed a stove. a leak fed the blast. Storeroom destroyed, mill lightly damaged. Loss estimated 15,000 to 20,000 with full insurance. no lives lost. Boston report mentions a separate bank cashier scandal involving William Chadwick and a series of crooked acts, with extensive debts and a mansion purchase in Squat village.

A conference of Jewish ministers in New York and nearby states organized a rabbinic society to meet regularly and discuss U S Judaism issues. Temporary president Rev IL Jacobs led, with Rev Dr Jastrow and Rev Dr Philips as officers. A plan for a permanent organization was to be reported later.
The Thirtieth District Assembly of Knights of Labor met in Boston on January 20 with seven women among delegates and strong growth reported. New districts formed, cooperative enterprises begun, a Laborer newspaper started in Haverhill, and plans for a hat factory there. Also noted were internal leadership discussions and adjournment with optimism for progress.
The House Military Affairs Committee moves to suspend rules to advance a Senate bill retiring General Grant. Senate Indian Affairs probes Cherokee land leases with testimony alleging bribery and influence. The River and Harbor bill seeks a study of navigable streams and possible U S purchase. Public Printer costs and naval safety gear debates follow as fires and losses strike several western towns.
The Senate opened with 13 members present and mourning for the late Senator Anthony. Eulogies followed by Edmunds Bayard Pendleton Morrill Garland Hoar Butler Tugalle Hawley Mandergon and Sheffield. The House debated bills, introduced measures for pilots pensions, a steel gunboat, telegraphic routes to Asia, and thanks to Captain Heatley. A rule-suspending motion failed 14 to 10. The Anthony resolutions were discussed amid adjournment attempts, with multiple dilatory motions before the House adjourned at five.
Wabash Toledo train bound for St Louis derailed by a broken rail near Venice four miles north of St Louis. The combination baggage and express car and smoker derailed. eight or ten passengers injured. United States Express Messenger J. J. Mattocks, about sixty, fatally hurt. Others injured include W Hassett, Conductor Baliou, and a brakeman. Several passengers walked to Union Depot with help.
