Rare Musk Ox Skull Donated to U Museum in Vermillion
Vermillion September 22 The skull of a musk ox dating back fifty thousand years was donated to the University of South Dakota Museum by John Van den Bos Corsica SD who found the fossil in a Douglas county gravel pit. Only two such skulls are known in the state and the specimen is noted as unusually perfect with two teeth and an upper jaw. The horns are broad flat and massive at the base curving down to a sharp point. Musk oxen resemble small long haired buffalo and were likely used for defense.
