Congressman Charles Manley Stedman of North Carolina, the last Civil War veteran in Congress, died at Mount Alto Hospital after a stroke. Born Jan 29 1841 in Pittsboro NC he served as a Confederate major under Lee and Jackson and later practiced law before decades of House service. His daughter Katherine Palmer of Greensboro cared for him.

Night school opened last night with 16 students in the commercial department including shorthand typewriting and bookkeeping and 10 in Americanization classes. A $10 fee is charged in the commercial department. Class 1 began two weeks earlier this year and registration is higher than last year. More are expected to enroll.

Ben Anderson is reported in a critical condition at his home 1068 Ohio Avenue Southwest after a sudden illness yesterday. His daughter Mes. E. Sut ter and son Sven Anderson of Hitchcock are with him, and another son Earl Anderson of Detroit is expected tonight. He is past 80 years old.

Mrs J A Willey Drops Dead in Miller Hotel
Mrs J A Willey pioneer resident of Miller died suddenly in the Vanderbilt Hotel while waiting for a bus to take her to Huron. Death was attributed to a heart attack. She had lived in the area about 15 years. Her husband Rev J A Willey died three years ago. Two sons survive. Funeral plans not announced.

The 1931 Huron tax levy is projected at 38.61 mills, down slightly from 1930, despite sewage plant costs. City levy 15.69, schools 17.45, state 3.10. county levy about 2.37. Total levy estimated at 234.61 mills, vs 235.87 last year. Citizens with 1,000 property pay 38.61 vs 39.87 previously. County cuts largely drive the reduction. Arthur H Kiburz of Kansas City died suddenly this morning near Wolsey, South Dakota, after a short illness while traveling with his brother Walter J Kiburz to Jamestown for business.
