WESSINGTON SPRINGS May 26 Special Dr E C Higbie of Wilson Teachers College delivered the commence ment address as 41 seniors graduated. His topic was A Lesson from Old Virginia. The program featured band pieces, glee club numbers, the presentation of diplomas and awards, and a valedictory and salutatory by senior leaders.
South Dakota attorney general rules the chain store tax law passed in 1939 does not affect licenses issued before July 1 1939. The law bases license fees on chain units nationwide, potentially raising costs for large chains yet preserving existing permits. The largest state chain with 45 stores paid 4743.50 last year. new law could raise about 2000, with total state revenue expected around 50000 annually.
The McKinley Hiawatha Girl Scouts Troop 3 went on an overnight bike trip to Camp Wilson by Lake Byron. Leaders Mrs J A Nelson and Mrs L D Rollins were assisted by Mrs Hoeve Gillespie and Mr Rollins. The girls packed provisions and cooked their own meals, woke early for breakfast, and hiked two hours before noon. They saw a large snake a snapping turtle and pheasant eggs. They enjoyed games crafts a play and marshmallows by the open fire. Remarks of thanks were given to volunteers who helped transport and support the camp. The troop will not meet in summer and plans a picnic at Riverside Park next Monday inviting mothers and the troop committee.
The Blue Ribbon Club met at Robert and Carroll Salisbury’s home in May with eight members present. Betty Heitland, president, led the meeting as members suggested a picnic. Talks covered conservation by Carroll Salisbury and range care for young poultry by Robert Salisbury. Marion Steuerwald shared her trip to the National Music Contest in Minneapolis. Lunch was served by Mrs. Salisbury. Next meeting set for June 20.
Coyotes a girls 4H Club made a baby layette of 25 articles for a needy mother. Each girl contributed garments, with Mrs. E A Lyman guiding and assisting the group as reporter Gloria Hanson notes.
Lake Preston Scout troop joins Oakwood district for an overnight camporee at Lake Campbell tonight. Transportation arranged by the Scout Executive committee with Scout Leader Mayer Engen in charge. The nine moons of Saturn include Diane Enceladus Hyperion Papetus Mimas Phoebe Rhea Tethys Titan.
Over 200 Brownie packs gathered at the city fairgrounds for a day of songs, games, and stories led by Betty Martin. They formed groups, shared a noonday lunch of wieners around a large campfire, with Brownie leaders Mrs. Grothe Mrs. Easton Mrs. Steffens and others assisting.
The Jolly Coyotes 4-H Club held a bake sale at Gertrude Smith's home on May 20, netting $7.58. Previous sales brought in $118, with $2.10 spent on lavette material. The club treasury stands at $16.74 to cover camp travel. Reporter Cook notes AL Eymen as the lesser and names the club.
Deland High School in Ava hosts the senior graduation program honoring 21 members of the 1929 class. Prof. W H Culp of Northern State Teacher's College will speak. Students listed include Robert Holmes, Duane Zarneke, Mary Ans Gross, Genevieve Seaman, Ben Hofer, Arlene Krentz, Mae Tschetter, Dorothy Remily, Leotz Bollersier, Duane Carroll Hajek, Merle Lucke, Mary Carney, Adith Elaine Buckley, Grace Hofer, Elaine Thompson, Herbert Wandell, Paul Kleinsasser, Willis Woodring, Merle Understock, Harjo Fechtelkotter, Donald Smith, Elma Grann.
Brookings editor R A Turner captured the annual Newspaper Day editorial writing prize with last weekends results announced locally. Honorable mention went to C J Webb Wessington Springs Independent Sherman Bates Champerlain Register and Aubrey Sherwood De Smet News.
