Springs Seniors Graduated 61 at Wessington Springs

WESSINGTON SPRINGS May 26 Special Dr E C Higbie of Wilson Teachers College Washington DC spoke at the Wessington Springs High School commencement Wednesday night as 61 seniors received diplomas The program featured music by the high school band directed by KF Lohn the girls chorus the mixed chorus and the valedictory by Merlin Hodgson with awards presented by Superintendent Barrett Lowe

Chain Store Tax Not Retroactive Ruling Impacts Licenses

Pierre May 26 The state attorney general ruled the new chain store tax law will not disturb licenses issued before May 1 1929 for the current year. The 1939 law, effective July 1, bases license fees on total chain stores nationwide, not South Dakota only. Largest local chain with 44 stores paid 4743.59 last year, likely about 2000 more under the new system, while overall state revenue is seen rising to about 50000 annually. Hiawatha Girls Camp Overnight Hike at Lake Byron

The McKinley Hiawatha Girl Scout Troop 3 from Byron Lake camped at Camp Wilson on Friday. Girls cooked their meals, carried provisions, and hiked two hours in the morning. They saw a large snake a snapping turtle pheasant eggs and enjoyed meals games and a self written play.

Blue Ribbon Club Discusses Camp and Judging School

The Blue Ribbon Club met May 23 at the country club home of Robert and Carroll Salisbury with eight members. Betty Heitland led the meeting to order and roll call yielded picnic suggestions. Talks covered Son Conservation, Range Care for Young Poultry, and a trip to Minneapolis for the National Music Contest. A lunch was served by Mrs. Salisbury. Next gathering set for June 20.

Jolly Coyotes a girls club made a layette of 25 items for a needy family. Each girl readied one or more garments under leader Mrs. E A Lyman who helped them finish the articles. Glenn Manson reported.

Brownie Revels Draw Brownie Packs At City Fairgrounds

Over 200 Brownies gathered at the city Fairgrounds for a Brownie Revels. They split into groups for games and stories, then circled a large campfire to roast wieners at noonday lunch. Leaders assisting included Mrs Grothe Mrs Easton and several named volunteers.

Jolly Coyotes 4 H Club Raises Funds at Bake Sale

The Jolly Coyotes 4 H Club held a bake sale at Gertrude Smith's home on May 20. They netted $11.26 from a previous sale, paid $2.10 for lavette materials, and now hold $16.74 to be used to compensate the girls. Leader is E A Lyman. reporter Evelyn Cook.
