Miner county corn variety trials compare twelve types

In Howard on May 25 farmers, with county extension service, planted twelve corn varieties across three plots in Miner county. Varieties include Alta Yellow Dent, Golden Jewel, Fulton Yellow Dent, Sandal Yellow Dent, Cisco Special, Green Valley Special, Shabine Yellow Dent, Ramsey Yellow Dent, Minnesota 13, Calico, King, Silver King and Daly White Dent. Plots span farms of Hillman Canova Zimmerilian Kramer Harmers Rumi Bastian Vincent etc. Four rows per plot, watch tassel dates and maturity for summer observation. Next fall yields to be compared.

Memorial Day Services Planned at Blunt Legion Hall

Memorial day services will be held at the American Legion hall in Blunt on Thursday with the Legion and Auxiliary in charge. G W Bledsoe of the Methodist church will give the address on The Origin and Protection of the American Flag. A short service is planned at the cemetery at the close of the meeting.

Blunt Couple Are Married at Pierre

Word reached here of the marriage of Chris Sias and Dottie Slater at Pierre on May 25. Sias, long-time resident, studied at Northern Bible college and plans to serve as a Church of Christ minister in Arapahoe Nebraska. Slater is the daughter of Mr and Mrs George Slater of Muscatine Iowa.

Pierre Eastern Star entertains visitors at dinner event

Members of the TSU Sun chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in Blunt were entertained by the Pierre chapter in Pierre. Onida and Ft. Pierre members attended. Both afternoon and evening sessions were held and a dinner was served.

ABHADEEN May 25 The Day-Brown Dairy Herd Improvement association reports alfalfa boosts butterfat profits. March average 48.9 pounds per cow for high herd. April fell to 48.0 due to alfalfa hay shortage as cows fed wild hay. Members increasing alfalfa and sweet clover acreage this spring.

Howes To Speak At Bonilla Memorial Day

W Howes of Huron Beadle county states attorney will give the Memorial day address Thursday at Bonilla community hall at 3 o clock. The Bonilla American Legion will hold memorial services at the cemetery at 10 in the morning. A funeral meal is expected to be served by the cemetery association in the Presbyterian church basement.

Large litter of pigs reported near Blunt

May 26 report from Blunt notes farmer Andrew Sxitchen owns a sow that farrowed 22 pigs. The breeder says the large litter is near the world record of 24 and stands as a remarkable local farm yield.

Seniors at Mellette Honored with Two Medals

Mellette High School awarded two medals to seniors Leonard Deloye and Hazel Grayce Tollefson. The best all around athlete medal was donated by BE Steinecker, and the scholarship loyalty and achievement medal by Balfour Company of Attleboro Massachusetts. Faculty judges conferred the honors.

Beresford area farmers studied with state and federal researchers show power costs depend on yearly hours of use and organization. One horse averaged 8.8 cents per hour with 1,089 hours, while another with 627 hours cost 17.8 cents. Tractor use ranged 50 to 450 hours with 90 cents to 1.98 dollars per hour, and yearly horse costs ranged around 60 to 100 dollars with straw and stubble pasture cutting costs.

Corn yield and quality tests under Spink county plan

Spink county agent J A Balishburs announces corn variety trials this season. Poor farmers across the county will test 10 varieties currently grown locally and seven new ones from north of the region. Trials form part of county corn improvement work alongside a 10 acre yield contest by the Redfield chamber and a Kiwanis junior corn club expected to enroll over 100 boys.
