Chinese Bandits Hold South Dakota Missionary

Four American missionaries fled through rain soaked mountains after a 2000 strong communist assault on the American Reformed Presbyterian mission at Lungyenchow. Dr C H Tolleman of Springfield S D was reportedly captured and later released through aid from locals and Chinese disguise allowed escape. Mrs Holloman and two children suffered nervous shock as the group crossed bandit country toward safety.

Wall Men Pave Dakota Third Streets In City Program

Workmen resurface all paving at the Dakota avenue and Third street intersection as part of a city program begun last week by Dan Wagner street commissioner. Crews mend holes in asphalt with crushed rock and liquid asphalt to seal porous spots while awaiting a second car of material.

Typhoon in Leyte Province Kills Ten, Widens Search

Manila May 88 A message to the executive bureau said Governor of Leyte reports ten people killed and three missing as a typhoon strikes the southern coast Friday. Continuous rain floods six villages, washes sixteen houses away, and damages crops.

Berwyn Police Chief Shot and Killed

Berwyn Illinois May 28. Chief of Police Charles Levy died after being shot Saturday night by William Doody and Eddie Mack. Doody, named as a gunman, is sought with a $2,090 reward. he was previously linked to the shooting of a postal inspector.

Federal Court to Close at Deadwood May 28

Federal court likely to end its spring term this afternoon in Deadwood. Prosecutors present Louis Two Strikes and Alfred Fyat as the final case on larceny charges. Twenty indictments have been returned by the grand jury, though the defendants named in the indictments have not been released.

Rainfall varying across central South Dakota boosts some areas

Reports from the South Dakota weather bureau show heavy rains in the north central and southeast, with Yankton at 2.47 inches and Mitchell at 0.78 inches. Huron saw only 0.1 inch, while Fairfax and Eureka had little to no precipitation. Cooler weather was forecast with no rain, and farmers noted dried fields in Beadle County awaiting more moisture. Corsica suffered a severe storm and Smet received a light shower.

Argue Time in Hotel Slaying in Watertown

In Watertown on May 27 the defense sought to adjust the time of Roy D. Lander s shooting in July 1927 from 15 to 20 minutes before the hour. The state contends Lander was seen on the street as late as 4 30 p m the day of the slaying while the defense argues he was in the hotel room around 1 p m. A witness testified Rogers telephoned at 1 p m while Lander and his wife Patty Rogers were together at the Wales seeking help.

Wrangle Over Tenants Ends in Fatal Shot in Chicago

In Chicago on May 28, watchman Thomas Scarborough killed engineer Arthur Vanderpaelt at a Sheridan Road apartment hotel after a dispute over allowing tenants to move in at night. Scarborough told police the quarrel over occupancy led to the shooting.

A H Clubs conduct judging trials for sheep horses and beef cattle at Frank Davis farm near Yate. Seniors Begin Final Exams at Huron College

Seniors at Huron College started their final examinations today and will continue through Friday. Commencement activities are set to begin Friday June 7 with about 35 graduates expected for the Tuesday June 11 ceremony. The other three classes begin tests on Wednesday June 5 and finish the following Monday.

The Rev A S Carlson pastor of First Congregational church left yesterday for Detroit to attend the National Congregational conference meeting May 28 to June 4. He serves as the official delegate from the Central association.

Funeral today for Lake Cottonwood drowning victim Dale Wirt

Dale Wirt whose body was recovered from Lake Cottonwood will be buried at his farm home eight miles northeast of Wessington. The Rev J Claude Smith will officiate at 3 PM. Burial is at Wessington near his father’s grave. Wirt drowned when his boat capsized in high waves and his brother in law Clifford Galbreath escaped by clinging to the boat. Survived by widow mother three sisters and one brother.
