Short Wave Expands Radio Field for Telephony
Edward Stanley reports that ITT and Paris firm Le Materiel Telephonique have developed 18 centimeter transmitters and receivers for telephony telegraphy and facsimile. Mirrored paths could enable talking around corners with a mile line, but curvature limits single transmitters to about 50 miles. The micro-ray is resilient to fog rain and night and may aid ship and air communications and future television, as engineers push bands from five to 50 meters toward three meters and beyond.
