State Acts To Control Syphilis In South Dakota

Pierre June 28 Two acts to control syphilis become law in July requiring marriage license applicants to submit to a blood test and obtain a physician certificate within 20 days. Licenses must also be accompanied by a physician certificate confirming noncontagious syphilis status. The law enforces a 20 day window before marriage and requires physicians or attendants to collect serological samples for state tests. A separate measure mandates that licenses be issued if the woman is pregnant at application time. Governor Bushfield notes a $2 fee for blood tests. The basic sciences licensing law survives, affecting healing arts practitioners with new exam requirements.
