National Guard Staff To Train For Selective Service Plan
Rapid City July 25 Col E A Beckwith South Dakota adjutant general said state guard officers would attend a selective service school at Little Falls Minnesota during Fourth Army maneuvers August 4 24 He outlined a tentative plan to introduce selective service in South Dakota pending congressional legislation and noted the use of election machinery as draft boards The governor would appoint a state director of selective service with the adjutant general staff in advisory roles The plan on file since 1935 would be ready to activate once law revisions allow It was stated most staff would study the subject during maneuvers Capt Richard Lyons already attended a New Orleans school The state staff includes Major Joy F Ethic Major Roy F Sackett Major Henry Van derbossche Capt Bruce Swain Major William Zwicky and Capt John Ryan

Former Wessington Springs man shocked by 7000 volts
Leonard Shaw, REA power line manager at Glenfield North Carolina, escaped death after 7000 volts passed through his body when he touched a live conductor atop a power line. The shock caused a backward throw and burns beneath the right armpit, with first aid administered for burns. Shaw is the son of Mrs. Viola Shaw of Wessington Springs.

Wessington Springs Adopts New Dial Telephone System

Services Held For Mrs Henry Mead in Wessington
Funeral services for Mrs Henry Mead were held at Wessington Community Church on Monday afternoon. Rev. R. J. Elwood officiated. A vocal trio including Mrs L B Chesabro, Mrs Stewart Frottum, and Miss Edna Allen sang with piano accompaniment by Mrs Eva De Haven. Pallbearers named Al Schnoor, Harl Ringheimer, Cuff, Bill Cavance, Guy Marvel, and Pat Marvel. Royal Neighbors attended the service at the cemetery.

Two Lane Children Escape Serious Injury In Accident
July 25 report of Lyle and Marilyn Kalkbrenner struck by a car while crossing a street. The vehicle was moving slowly and both children were thrown to the ground. Marilyn sustained a minor leg injury and is recovering. Lyle uninjured. The incident occurred after dark and is described as unavoidable.

Rites At Lake Preston For Accident Victim
Funeral services were held at the Catholic Church in Lake Preston for Miss Lucile Ohlsen age 20. Rev Father Tatten of De Smet conducted the service and burial followed in Arlington cemetery. Miss Ohlsen died of burns from a kerosene can explosion suffered the previous Saturday. Survivors include her parents five brothers and two sisters.

Travelers serve Rapid City as Sutfin illness prompts departure

Funeral services for Leo Schmidt 18 drowned at Alturas California were held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Hague township with Rev H C Schmitker in charge. Burial followed in Hague Cemetery. Pallbearers were classmates Morland Tidemann Edward Meyer Morris McGeough Robert Tiggelaar Jack Titus Kenneth Miller. Schmidt completed his junior year at Willow Lake High and was a prominent class member. He had gone to California earlier this summer after finishing school.

Funeral Held For Pioneer Miller Woman
Funeral services were held at St Ann's Catholic Church for Birs James Murphy who died at her Miller home after years of illness. Born five miles southwest of Miller in 1888 she moved to Miller early. She ran a beauty shop with her husband a pioneer in Miller. Survivors include her husband a son in Brookings a brother in Huron and a sister Mrs Grant Boles of Miller. Burial followed at the Catholic cemetery.

Twister Destroys Farm Buildings Near Miller
A late Sunday twister struck the Will Wade farm 17 miles south of Miller, destroying a barn, garage and two windmills while the family stayed inside. Debris blew past the house as strong winds felled alfalfa stacks north of Miller with no other damage reported in the vicinity.

Lightning Sparks Fires Across Highmore County Weekend
