Mrs J C Sandberg Died After Stroke at Home

Mrs. J C Sandberg died at her home 713 Kansas Avenue NE after a weeks illness from a paralysis stroke suffered Sunday June 30. Born Clara Grace Wilson March 1 1876 Mt Pleasant Ta she married J O Sandberg January 23 1910 in Chicago and moved to Huron. Survived by husband son Donald two sisters and one brother. She belonged to the Baptist church Eastern Star and Ladies Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen. Funeral plans pending brother from Massachusetts may attend.

Dry Law Wins in Canadian Province Plebiscite

In Prince Edward Island Charlottetown July 19 voters backed the prohibition act in a plebiscite on retention versus substitution of government controlled liquor sales. About 17 000 electors cast ballots roughly half of the 1927 provincial election turnout. The two questions asked whether to keep the prohibition act or endorse government sale of liquor.

French Finance Committee Pushes Debt Reservation Into Bill

Paris July 19 The finance committee of the chamber of deputies voted to include reservations on foreign debt ratification in the subsidiary bill, opposing Premier Poincare's policy. The committee rejected all compromise texts and plans to continue the debate tomorrow unless Poincare requests suspension due to illness.

Slayings in Kalamazoo Linked to Hex Belief

Eugene Burgess his wife and two children are jailed as investigators probe a hex slaying in Kalamazoo Michigan. The victim Mrs Etta L Fairchilds 75 was found murdered in a cistern. Burgess says she cast evil mental influence over his family and caused prior deaths.

Three Arrest Made In Sioux Falls Alcohol Raid

Two men and a woman were arrested in Sioux Falls after police seized 54 gallons of alleged liquor being moved from Sioux City to Rapid City. Suspects named A. R. Johnson C. E. Johnson and May Jones, all of Rapid City, to be arraigned tomorrow.

Women Enforced Prohibition Drive in the South

Deputy administrator for the state announces a federal crackdown on bootlegging led by women. He claims hundreds of women will face federal judges as they are routed from the trade, noting 75 percent of bootlegging is by women and many act as agents for husbands or male associates. He declares the days of southern chivalry toward law violators are over.

Morgan is held in Beadle County jail with two bonds totaling 10000 dollars one 5000 dollar bond on a murder charge and one 5000 dollar bond on a statutory charge related to the death of Ruby Irene Nyman of Brookings. Rogers Bank Robber Nabbed After Jail Break Attempt

South Dakota guards stopped a jail break at the state penitentiary when two convicts were found sawing through bars. Roy Rogers of Minnesota, jailed for a Huron bank robbery, had already cut his cell but waited for Herman Jensen as his partner. Rogers, extradited after a Beadle county case, and accomplices Patrick Hanley and P. J. Driscoll were sentenced to 15 years for the Parmers Merchants bank robbery.

League Seeks City Ordinance for Radio Interference Control

The Huron Radio Listeners League reports completion of inspections of 311 residences and businesses in 25 blocks. They tested lights transformers and power distribution to prove need for a city ordinance banning sale after a date of appliances likely to cause radio interference.

Parrish Says Miller Hearing Has No Effect

Hand county State’s Attorney Parrish stated the Miller hearing before Judge Briggs would have no effect, claiming he dismissed the action for not being consulted. The proceedings continued with Miller attorney J. Bushfield and others representing both sides as detectives Wilshire and Marlette face liquor to minors charges. The complainant is Mrs. Winifred Nuhn and Parrish offered to handle the case if refiled through his office.

College Instructor Returns To Colorado Miss Hagener

Miss Ruth Hagener who has served six years as an instructor in modern languages and science at Huron College left Huron last night for Littleton Colorado. She expected to join Prof and Mrs H G Witt of Huron in Rapid City on the way to Colorado. This fall she plans to pursue a master's degree at a western university and has been granted leave of absence by Huron College authorities.

Rapid City to Host 1930 American Legion Convention

Rapid City plans an aggressive campaign to bring the 1930 state convention of the American Legion to the city. A committee led by Commander Arthur Sielsen reported after two months of study and asked a delegation to invite the convention and secure support and entertainment in the Black Hills.

Barn Fire Causes Small Damage at Hartwich Home

A fire broke out in the rear barn at Dr. H. A. Hartewich’s residence at 908 Ohio Ave SW around 12:10 PM. The barn interior burned heavily while the roof and walls suffered blaze effects. A nearby barn was also scorched. No evidence of electrical wiring presence. investigators suggest children playing with matches as a possible cause.

Hagood To Lead 7th Corps Area In Omaha

Maj Gen Hagood relieved from second coast artillery district and assigned to command the 7th Corps Area with HQ in Omaha Nebraska. He is in the Philippines and expected to take command about August 22 replacing Maj Gen Vandeman. War Department calls the transfer a routing matter.
