Beet Growers Back Philippine Freedom And Tariff Support
Belle Fourche January 21. President August Maass urged Black Hills Beet Growers to back Philippine freedom to enable a protective tariff for American sugar producers. Maass warned Philippine coconut oil harms US farmers and cheap Philippine sugar would ruin beet grower markets. He said Congress will not tariff islands while US controls them and urged continued efforts to secure tariffs on Cuban and foreign sugar. A clearing house for sugar distribution and promotion of South Dakota sugar sales were proposed, with emphasis on using local workers and cooperation between factory officials and growers.
