In St Paul three men Guat Erickson Henry Karvola and Tom Hill live in a cave deep in sandstone bluffs along the Mississippi while facing unemployment. They converted a cave recess into a sleeping area and meals are prepared at an entrance “kitchen” as they survive on 25 to 50 cents a day until work returns.

Washington January 26 The unnamed public lands committee reported favorably a bill to lease land granted to them for educational purposes where oil gas or other minerals may exist Senator Walsh of Montana noted the 1889 law allowed sale for school benefit at ten dollars per acre He said leasing could be more practicable for mineral deposits but current law does not permit it The bill would also permit sale at five dollars per acre for grazing land.
