Reducing production costs boosts net returns, not output
Professor Hutton argues that cutting production costs can raise farm profits without increasing total output. He cites dairy and pig farming comparisons and cites South Dakota trial data showing soil plant food can raise yields by about 27 percent while lowering land use and capital needs. He stresses science as accessible knowledge for all producers.
