Armour & Company Buyer Explains Pork Price Gap
Armour & Company head buyer Kenneth H. Butler argues pork prices reflect by products and shrinkage, not pig prices. He estimates 30 pounds waste per 100 live pounds and urges a shift to 95 percent pork chop, ham and bacon, plus greater use of cheaper cuts to balance supply and costs.

Hybrid Sweet Corn Proves Its Value in Garden Tests
Brookings reports that planting three hybrid varieties Marcross P39 Spancross and legard P39x145 can yield a succession of prime sweet corn over three to four weeks. L L Davis heads the state college horticulture department which tested hybrid sweet corn in 1939. Marcross P39 matures in 75 days and yields excellent corn for 10 to 15 days. Spancross is an early, good quality variety. Togold offers excellent quality but a shorter edible period.

Labor Saving Equipment for South Dakota Windbreaks
Soil Conservation Service foresters describe two labor-saving tools for windbreak planting. A mechanical tree planter, powered by a 15-30 tractor, plants 80 to 120 trees per hour with a four-man crew, saving about 25 percent in costs versus hand planting. The system marks rows, spaces trees automatically, reduces spring labor, and minimizes tree loss, with broader use reducing costs on larger plots.

Rotary Cultivator Aids Tree Row Cultivation
The Soil Conservation Service develops a rotary cultivator attachment for one row corn cultivators to weed between trees without root damage. It operates from the driver's seat with four rotating blades and a trip lever. The invention saves time and labor while cutting windbreak costs. Canadian flax is grown for seed and fiber.
