The 1940 crop season is forecast to bring ideal growing conditions after years of concern. A fringe of planetary influence theories links warmer trends to droughts and storms, predicting cooler May to mid June, then showers into August with a warm fall and potential drought in June 1941.

Always Be Prepared For Dry Year The Hornigs’ Thriving Central South Dakota Farm
Phil Hornig, Yale farmer, advocates drought preparedness through drought resistant rough feed and cattle. He raises 48 beef cattle on 200 acres of hay and pasture, grows grain for feed, and relies on horse power over debt. Married since 1924 with three sons, the Hornigs farm cash only and avoid luxury.

Value of Sorghum Grains Versus Corn for Beef Gain
Feeding trials by the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station show 12 percent more Soon er mile is needed per 100 pounds gain in steers fed sorghum than corn. Three groups of 30 two-year-old steers were fed ground corn, Soon er mile, and amber cane seed with alfalfa hay and soybean meal. Results: corn 493 lb grain per 100 lb gain, Soon er mile 553.5 lb, amber cane 827.3 lb. dressing 58.8 percent for first two lots, 58.1 percent for amber cane, carcass grades vary with lot. The study aims to compare sorghum varieties on beef production and costs.
