Fallow Urged For Fields In Which Winter Wheat Was Dusted In
Great Plains farmers who dusted in winter wheat on bone dry land should leave fields fallow next year to build soil moisture. Department of Agriculture experts cite long term experiments showing higher odds of crop failures when seeding on dry soil. Moisture depth greatly shifts yield probabilities, with deeper moisture reducing failure risk and boosting potential bumper crops. Early moisture accumulation through summer fallow has produced more reliable wheat starts in many trials.
