Wells found to irrigation in Steptoe Valley Nevada

The United States Geological Survey reports a viable irrigation water supply from shallow wells in Steptoe Valley near Ely Nevada. A model well 122 feet deep yields about 262 gallons per minute with low drawdown, enough to irrigate around 80 acres, and water from several horizons tests as good for irrigation. The Nevada groundwater system is vast and largely hidden in coarse valley deposits, offering large potential but with variable yields and high pumping costs. The Survey began studying state groundwater in 1911 and received a 1917 appropriation of 25,000 to continue this work.
