United States Senator Dietrich of Nebraska proposed using 50 000 or more Federal prisoners to dig the Panama Canal. He suggested a daily wage of 25 cents for actual work with 60 percent paid on landing and final discharge, the rest in two installments after three and six months, conditionally tied to no new misdemeanors.
The Post Office Department issues fraud orders against Franco- American Mercantile Co of San Francisco and T P Miller of Seattle. The San Francisco firm allegedly runs a lottery linked contract scheme with weekly payments totaling 80 before maturation at 160, deducting expenses. Miller is named as agent for Cumulative Credit Co of San Francisco, also subjected to a fraud order. The notices outline postal action and related details.
A New York booklet claims to show how W G Vanderbilt turned $1000 into $1,000,000 through savvy investments. Vanderbilt says the pamphlet circulates widely, with bankers and financiers endorsing it as guidance for better financial outcomes. Jalvis Kruttschnitt representing the Harriman roads including Salt Lake and Los Angeles orders several million dollars worth of rolling stock for immediate delivery. From Pullman Company come five dining cars and five to five observation making cars for Southern Pacific, eight dining cars for Salt Lake and Los Angeles. Delivery of 100 new locomotives ordered recently will begin in January next, with 76 heavy consolidation megul engines for Southern Pacific.

The Mining and Scientific Press states the Tonopah formation is andesite and Goldfield is rhyolite. Ore lies in crushed rock zones in both districts and bears no likeness to the Comstock lode at Virginia City in minerals or structural geology.

United States Government awarded contracts totaling 1,500,000 for 160 miles of lateral ditches in Churchill County Nevada. Bids were opened Friday last week at Hazen and work will start immediately with a six month completion target. Warren & Company also known as San Francisco Construction Company led most bids.
The Lacin cut-off across Great Salt Lake has operated long enough to show savings of about 2600 dollars daily in operating expenses, with annual figures around 900000 dollars and interest costs of 340000 dollars a year.
