Seeding Forage Grasses Proves Profitable Under Favorable Conditions

The Forest Service reports results from over 500 tests across the West since 1907 on forage grasses and clovers. Lightly sowing seeds of timothy, smooth bromegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, orchardgrass, and redtop yields best stands, with timing and soil moisture crucial for success. Seeding is costly and profitable only where conditions are well above average, favoring native vegetation buildup over heavy seed beds.
