A Crime and Its Punishment
Four thousand men and boys witnessed a lynching four miles from Wilmington Delaware as a Black man was burned at the stake after attacking and murdering a seventeen year old white girl. The incident follows similar mob violence in Ohio and Illinois and reflects broad sectional anger over inadequate official punishment. The piece argues sentiment is identical across regions and notes mobs arise when laws fail to deter such crimes.
