R. S. Bradley who has conducted the Minnesota Hotel sold out his business to Julius Graham. Graham will hereafter conduct the hotel. Bradley and family are moving to Sodaville.
Fellman and Nichelle seek a logging road through timber on the lower Siuslaw with Florence capitalist O W Hurd opposing. Hearing set before the county court today with Thompson and Hardy for the plaintiffs and A C Woodcock for the opposing party. Clerks prepare for a baseball game with the printers soon.
A Kalama reporting from Seattle describes a fire in Georgetown near Seattle that leveled the Safe Hamilton block the Scandanavian hotel and two other structures causing 25000 in damage. A woman and her two children narrowly escaped from the hotel by using a rope to descend from an upper floor. Governor Chamberlain announced military staff appointments including D L Houston Wm Moore Geo W Hazen and C H McCullough. The Lewis and Clark Commission awarded Raphael Peck of Buffalo 2500 for a symbol design for the World's Fair. In Spokane a mass resignation by telephone operators led to Western Conference affiliation and possible coast wide strike.
About 120 operators for the Pacific States Telephone Company in Spokane struck over wage gains and union recognition. They seek a $2 monthly student wage, 40 per month minimum for competent operators, 15 after years' experience, an eight hour day, and better dress standards. Linemen and repair crews joined the walkout, crippling service while Seattle replacements were planned.
A Union Pacific Coal Company mine explosion in Hanna Wyoming on July 1 killed two men and injured many, destroying vast property. The blast shattered main shaft timbers and entrances, filling workings with debris and trapping survivors buried alive.
The Western Oregon Immigration Association organized in Portland with capital stock and prominent leaders to coordinate real estate dealers and the eastern immigration bureau. E. B. Frasier named general manager to organize local exchanges and reduce rivalries hindering homeseeker placement in Oregon.
Washington July 1 The appointment of John Barrett of Oregon former U S minister to Siam to be minister to the Argentine Republic to succeed ex Governor William P Lord who has retired on account of health and old age was issued today Barrett born Grafton Vermont November 28 1866 graduated Dartmouth 1889 taught in Oakland editor roles in San Francisco Portland and elsewhere held diplomatic posts and wrote on the Orient He also served as a World’s Fair commissioner and war correspondent
In Baker City Oregon on July 1 ex Sheriff Huntington faced trial. The jury deliberated overnight and asked for rereading of instructions. They could not agree on embezzled amount though nearly in agreement on verdict and were discharged after a brief return to court.

Fred Sharkey of Lucky Boy Mining Company reports a rich strike at the Lucky Boy mine with visible gold in quartz. Conservative estimates place ore at 2000 per ton though no assay yet. A parallel strike in Confidence mine holds 100000 tons of rich ore. The company expects a clean-up between July 1 and 10. Payroll tops 60 and will reach 100 as operations expand. Electric plant site secured and ground leveled seeking regional benefits.
Portland reports that B H Casterline has demonstrated a steel hardening process using a pliable wrought iron method. Zachriah Taylor Clark and Jonathan Rice Neill hold patent 571,444 for the Electro Tempering and Toughening Compound and threaten legal action if Casterline infringes, stating decades of effort underlie their claim.
A. C. Woodcock attended the opening of the Salem carnival and praised local enthusiasm. He remarked that Salem has adopted a Greater Salem spirit, with residents ready to meet visitors from other towns and break from old conservatism.
Official program for Eugene July 4 celebration lists day’s officers and events. Parade starts at 10 a.m with city officials, guards, bands, and civic groups, followed by park exercises at 11 a.m with readings and a speech. Workmen tried buckets as wind spread flames. fire department prompt action saved the structure though most of the roof burned. No contents were inside. no insurance. loss to the private owner with a tin roof planned.
