Great Discovery Tempering Steel by Portland Toolmaker

B J Casterline of Portland, a toolmaker, rediscovered tempering steel. An Oregonian reporter watched tests where a large nail tempered by his method remained sharp after shaving with a drawer knife. An ax tempered this way cut a sixteenth of an inch into a tool steel bar without edge loss. The process hinges on dipping the iron into a secret chemical after red heating, and there is no patent possible to keep the method secret.
