A playful diary of a pink square postage stamp who travels inside an envelope. The narrator details a rescue by a mail clerk, damage from a hammer, and a journey that ends with a loving pairing and the stamp’s view of a beloved wearer.
In 1901 New Orleans Beppo, a prosperous immigrant, runs a fruit stall with exotic Central American fruits. Tessa, a striking young woman with dusky hair and scarlet cheeks, draws customers as Arthur Gray lounges by the wall, pricing fruit and listening to her lilting English while recovering from pneumonia.
In New Orleans a fruit stall romance between Tessa and a handsome stranger sparks jealousy in Giusseppe the charcoal peddler. A confrontation at a hotel ends with Giusseppe deciding to honor Tessa and Gray’s vow, while Tessa forgives and kisses Giusseppe, saying “For lagniappe.”
