A Oberlin resident bought $1000 of Union Pacific stock under par over a year ago. Yesterday the stock traded in New York at 31,000 per share, making him far richer. Rumor says a large block of Standard Oil stock is also held in Oberlin.
The Ashland Gazette reports a southwest Ashland spring of remarkable quality rumored to have a “fountain of youth” effect. Last Sunday three well known Ashland parties reportedly drank 18 pints, 16 pints, and 15 pints respectively within two hours.
A meeting saw over 500 citizens weigh a waterworks petition amid debate on injunctions and council power. The council tentatively accepted the petition for consideration by a 6 to 8 vote, amid tension over previous votes and new litigation. Ridgeville citizen George P. Burrell died suddenly at 81, leaving a large family across states. Vermilion fishing tale reports two men, Wagner and Nickle, with a catfish weighing 18.5 pounds. local warden noted a veteran plans long fishing trip for boys, while an official review followed.
A party of Oberlin and Elyria gentlemen including J. Jolson and E Hinman traveled to Wellington to meet Wellington business leaders. Mayor Couch welcomed them to town with hospitality, speeches followed, and the visitors enjoyed a social evening before departing on the C D B Ry railway car.
Charles P B Williams sues Pax Furnace Co. for unpaid wages claiming 20 cents per hour agreed, reduced to 15 cents without notice after his first quarter. Superintendent Long says Williams was paid 2.00 per day for carpenter work, though much of the work was labor. Justice Priday reserved decision until Monday. Attorneys H A Pounds for Williams and A Gubnore for defendant.
City horsemen plan a Decoration Day matinee at the fair grounds with classes for speed above plow horses, scales from professional to green teamsters, trotters and pacers, plus a grand free for all. Entries and prizes are open for suggestions. H. M. Andress and committees invite questions and proposals.
Charles Owry and Jack Ryan were found guilty of bank robbery after a swift trial. The jury returned the verdict within about half an hour. Judge Gilmer set a new trial motion for Wednesday. Nell Lowry and two unfamiliar women, present during the verdict, attracted attention as detectives continued to monitor five supposed gang members linked to Lowry.
The probate court filed for Charlotte Smith of Oberlin and Frank H. Bacon of Brownhelm. Ed Bath of Elyria was named guardian for George K. Bath and Catherine R. Bath. An authenticated copy of John Smith’s will from Lebanon, Pa., was admitted to record. Theodore Remley of Kansas City was ordered in a deposition related to the case.
The Republican party in Richland County outlines a primary style vote to elect delegates for the senatorial district convention. Delegates are apportioned by ward and precinct totals, with a total of 84 delegates across numerous townships and wards. Three candidates seek county support for the senatorial delegation: Huntington Brown, Col. D B Cockley, and C H Workman, though a post-selection agreement is anticipated.
A special meeting of the State separation of County Auditors at the Great Southern in Columbus discussed raising valuations on railroad property, bank stock, surplus and unrealized profits, and set a minimum tax per telephone box at 10. Auditors suggested taxing banks on full value and railroads on higher valuations, with November to settle remaining items.
Prank Varmuske, thirteen, was brought before Justice Lawrence Tausday after noon charged with assault and battery for beating a little girl with a stick. He pleaded ently and was bound over to the probate court. William Culp pleaded guilty to an assault and battery charge brought by John Buckley and was fined three dollars and costs after a Tuesday evening clash at Seventh Street and West Avenue.
George Armbruster five year old son of Mr and Mrs George Armbruster of Broad Street died Wednesday evening at nine oclock from croup. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at two oclock.
Frank Peters of Ohio Street is battling blood poisoning after a small bruise on his leg several days ago. He sought medical help Friday night from Dr. Cushing as the condition developed.
Erie railroad plans to arm detectives with blood hounds to aid in tracking thieves. The idea, once common in the South, gains traction in the North, with counties and towns like Lodi already raising funds. Oberlin is urged to consider the measure.
A drunken man was jailed at Lorain after a new razor was found on him. He claimed to have found it in a barn at South Lorain, a known tramp hangout. Police found six men asleep in the barn, four arrested, two escaped, with raiders and knives plus other plunder. Sheriff Warden linked the theft to Benj Breckenridge’s general store in Eipton, identified by clerk CG Lucas.
The Eleventh district convention of the Ohio Christian Missionary society met at Fields Tuesday and Friday with Women’s meetings Thursday. Mrs. A. R. Webber and Mrs. J. C. B. Stivers spoke, Rev. J. C. B. Stivers addressed portions, and Miss Crawmer read lines on pledge enforcement. Mabel Phipps offered solos as Lorain and Medina county participants contributed, marking the gathering as one of the district’s best.
Three men from Massachusetts New York and Buffalo met Elyria Chamber of Commerce leaders Thursday to scout a site for a potential $200,000 factory. They aim to unite drop forging and sheet steel pulley production with cheap fuel and labor, proposing a $500,000 capitalization and capacity for 1,200 to 1,500 workers. An initial $140,000 stock subscription was discussed, with $75,000 already pledged if they settle here.
