The city council refused to pass an ordinance prohibiting stalls in saloons at its Tuesday evening meeting. The petition requested by every congregation in the city last Sunday was read and laid on the table on motion by F. A. Smith and Otto Koehn, with one dissenting vote from I. D. Faxon.
The Thaw trial enters a startling phase as Evelyn Thaw testifies about some 40 letters from Architect White received before and after her marriage. The letters and a Thaw letter to the Comstock Humane society suggest White’s network lured and seduced young girls, with a 15 year old in a famous pie incident cited. Local temperance measures face stiff opposition from saloonists and stalled stalls ordinances, while ministers push for action and a possible local option election.
Huntington resident T. D. Phelan reports a cow gave birth Monday to a calf with eight legs and feet, two tails and nearly three bodies. The creature has one head with two noses and three eyes including a center eye, described as the most wondrous freak of nature in the area.
An appeal invites the public to donate household supplies food and clothing for the 610 Ladies Home on Friday. Readers are urged to contribute items such as fruit jelly sugar coffee bedclothes butter and other usable goods for the institution.
H. W. Woodward of the Cleveland Engineering Company presented figures to the city council showing a municipal lighting plant as the likely solution. Total estimated cost about 65 000 with allocations for property engines electric equipment lamps poles wires building labor and engineering. The plant would power 300 freight jobs under current plans 254 required with 20 added rights. A secret meeting Friday will consider final steps.
Examiners from the state department of uniform public accounting visited the county and found a large sum 113,000 was repaid into the county treasury by several officials. Amounts listed include $134.69 by probate judge B. AG. Hinnman and $299.95 by Elyria Democrat editor F. Sails bury. Examiners say some officials construed the law to justify fees and the sheriff’s coal payments were improper. Other officials also took fees but have not repaid. The examiner’s report will be released soon.
Mrs. Henry Cregg of Belden Lorai county attempted suicide Tuesday morning at her parents home. She used her father's revolver and fired two shots in an outhouse, suffering two bullet wounds to the forehead. Found insensible, she was moved to her parents' residence as doctors monitor her condition.
Baseball fans report that Joe Stoup, formerly with Elyria, has signed to play for Newark again this season. He finished last year with Newark and helped lift the team from last in the league standings. Also, H M Andress v City of Elyria is postponed due to the absence of material witness H F Eady.
An English committee and Mr. Charles of Strand schools visited Elyria to study local education methods. Charles arrived Tuesday and, after observing, departed that evening, praising the Elyria system and its teachers.
Word reached Lorain Tuesday afternoon that Fether Walser a Catholic priest linked to the Agatha Reichlin murder case has died in the west. He was confined in the county jail here earlier after his arrest and later released then moved west. Bloodhounds once followed his trail from the Reichlin home to St Joseph's hospital before his arrest and later discharge.
The Brownies saloon at Hast avenue and Broad street seeks to add a veranda over the sidewalk entrance. W C Brown, proprietor, appeared before the city council on Tuesday evening. The plan also includes a connected hotel. The request was referred to the building and lands committee.
Four firms are expected to bid for the belt line franchise as talks on final terms and route consents proceed. J. C Crisp addressed the council urging clear franchise details, with C and S W, Lake Shore Electric, Cleveland Brooklyn and Elyria lines among likely bidders. Local promoters led by H H Clough and A L Ganford plan a three cent fare and seek published franchise terms for bidding.
Hisha Commandery No. 606 Knights Templars will host a dancing party in their hall on Thursday evening February 21. This marks the fifth in a series of similar events led by the Sir Knights.
