A fire at a South Lorain residence around 10:30 Wednesday morning left Emily Beach aged eighteen and Mrs Julius Py dead from smoke suffocation. Emily tried to rescue the two day old baby as Mrs Py descended seeking help. both mother and child perished in the upstairs room. The blaze caused little damage beyond water and was extinguished without major incident. Py worked at the steel plant and moved to Lorain from Canton about a year ago. Phil Walsh was in Cleveland on business.
A 14 year old worker at the Columbia Steel and Iron Company had his hand badly crushed Wednesday morning around 7 30. The injury occurred when his hand was caught in gears and doctors amputated the first finger. Frank Moore and Joseph Cormely were brought to the Elyria jail on Wednesday. Moore is the man captured west of the town. Cormely is held for regaining an officer.
Newton Foster a Rockport motorman died at Cleveland Hospital after a Kamme street car crash Tuesday morning. He suffered a broken ankle and severe injuries that proved fatal. The Lorain County Building and Lawn Co completed four years of active work, aiding 62 houses in Elyria and Lorain, paying dividends of 5090 to stockholders, with no mortgages foreclosed. The note lauds the company as a valuable homes builder.
B H Starr has negotiated selling his Middle Avenue and Eighth Street grocery to M Haag owner of the building. Possession is set for September 1. Starr plans to open a downtown grocery in the Century block east room. Chief Hafner calls veteran firefighters to Neway Engine House Thursday at 7 to arrange a trip to North Amherst on August 19. Rose Hornby sues George Hornby for divorce alimony and custody alleging habitual drunkenness and cruelty. marriage since 1879.
The Ohio Supreme Court heard a case Tuesday to determine if health officers elected before the municipal code remain in office. J H Craig, elected health officer of Mansfield in June 1902, contests the board’s later election of A H McCollouh after the code’s passage.
State health secretary Dr. C O Probst announced Ohio is practically free of smallpox with Cleveland fully under control. He noted Masgillon as the only bad spot, reporting eighteen cases in the state.
