Fritz Meyer executed at Sing Sing for murder
Fritz Meyer died in the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison at 6 05 am for the murder of Policeman Frederick Smith in New York City on October 27 1897. The case linked to the August 1897 church slaying by George Steltz and Meyer’s prior assault record. Meyer claimed atheism and questioned robbing churches during his examination.

Joliet Tinplate Mill Closes Over Union Dispute
Joliet Illinois May 23 the Great Western tinplate mill shut down after a strike by all workers. Superintendent Jones refused to reinstate Robert Jones president of local union No 26 Amalgamated Association of Tinplate Workers. Jones had visited the Pittsburg convention as Joliet’s representative and returned to find his post vacant.
