Elgin area observes World Day of Prayer on Thursday February 16 1961 with The Lord's Prayer Meditation. The service features organ preludes by Janice Loftsgard scripture by Rev Dennis Stutrud hymns including Holy Holy Holy and a vocal solo The Lord's Prayer, plus offerings and benediction. Participating churches include First Baptist Elgin Lutheran Clermont Methodist Tilyria Community and St Pauls Methodist Elgin.
Valley high school girls defeated South Winneshiek 90 to 46 on Friday February 19 in Calmar to extend their season record to 20-0. Diane Frieden led with 51 points, Anita Olson added 29, while Margaret Rothmeyer of South Winneshiek scored 18. The Tigers led all game and finished regular season with an undefeated mark.
Valley High Tigers defeated South Winneshiek Calmar 84 to 61 in a non-conference game at Ossian. Valley opened with 12–0 run and led 27–12 after one, 44–27 at half. Dennis Shaffer sprained ankle early. Roger Torson led Valley with 27 points, Carl Erickson 14, Hueter 25 for Calmar.
Francis Cleak of Albia retired from the Railway Express Agency after four decades of service. He began with the agency 40 years ago when packages were delivered by horse-drawn wagons.
Mr and Mrs Floyd Puffett of Manchester were honored guests at a Maryville dinner on February 15 to observe their 50th wedding anniversary. Close relatives were included. Mr and Mrs George Vaughn attended.
Dr and Mrs R A Crider left Sunday evening for Chicago to visit Keith and Kenneth Crider. Monday evening they departed Chicago for Rialto California to stay about a month in the home of their daughter and son in law Byron Keith.

Friday Feb 24 The Chic Look 1 30 p.m. Elkader Municipal Building and Boys county 4-H basketball tournament Elkader gym. Saturday Feb 25 Elkader Coop Annual Meeting Elkader Municipal Building.
Pleasant Valley Homemaker's Club gathered February 10 at Mrs. Carlton Krueger's residence. Members sang the American Farm Bureau Spirit song and pledged allegiance. Roll call featured favorite recipes using milk. Mrs. Herbert Ash spoke on reapportionment progress. The chairman reported on the last meeting.
An executive meeting in Fayette reviewed a thank you letter from the Good Samaritan Home for Christmas canned food donation. The Iowa Future Series questionnaire was debated, and Fact Sheets distributed. Mrs M J Blockhus spoke on Miracle in the Hills by Dr Mary Sloop, 1951 American Mother of the Year.
The meeting of the Veterans and Auxiliary from World War I is scheduled for Monday February 20 at 8:00 p.m. in the Maynard Community Hall.
The installation will have J A Pye of Dubuque officiating for the Veterans and Mrs Pye, 2nd District President, for the Auxiliary. All members are urged to attend. The Fausers, accompanied by Mrs Elmer Lembke and Judy, visited Des Moines, with Mrs H H Wolf visiting in Ames and Mrs Nelle Reusser in Marshalltown. They plan to return Thursday.
Mr and Mrs Don Fauser left Monday for Des Moines to attend the twenty fourth annual Iowa Independent Oil Jobbers Association Convention at Hotel Fort Des Moines. The event ran Feb 14 and 16 with a luncheon and style show at Younkers and a luncheon for Mrs America at the hotel. Mr and Mrs Oliver Torkelson stayed at the Fauser home during their absence.
Mr and Mrs Lawrence Welzel celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at St Pauls Lutheran Church Postville on Sunday Feb 19 from 2 00 to 430. They wed Feb 22 1911 in Perham Minnesota and began farming on the Welzel farm now owned by their daughter Irene and son in law.
Rohan Heins and his family are noted with four grandchildren and three great grandchildren mentioned in the brief.
Harvey Paulson of Postville fished near Livingood springs on Yellow River and caught several good sized fish. He observed pussy willows sending shoots two to three inches long, noting the possible hint of spring but warning the pussy willows may face a tough season.
