Iowa Courts Annual Report Shows Court Activity and Dispositions
The released annual state report by Iowa courts, led by judicial statistician Clarence Kading, details 1 861 criminal cases pending in district courts, 28 528 civil and 118 criminal new filings, 28 941 civil and 7 165 criminal dispositions, with 20 175 civil and 1 809 criminal cases still pending and a total disposition count of 36 108, marking a 53 percent drop from 1961 but a large rise since 1958. Gov. Harold Hughes announces public office hours starting Sept. 4, limiting callers to five minutes per person, aimed at broad access. A University of Iowa team notes Iowa local property taxes in 1960 were lower than in the 1930s, projecting state levy changes if 1980 rates matched the 1920s averages, while population shifts influence local spending. The World War II era saw major spending increases. 1960 property tax share stood at 0.1 percent of personal income, up from 4.3 percent in 1930.
