Hot August weather slows cow feeding and milk output. Extension dairy specialist Robert Fincham advises yard handouts in shade and grass silage with grain to sustain production. Silage reduces protein supplement needs versus poor pasture.

Old Settlers Program Opens With Music and History
The Old Settlers event featured a ten piece pep band under Wayne Aurand, invocations by Rev. Dewey Lamprecht, and community singing led by Lamprecht with piano by Mrs. Dean Eggleston. The New Providence ladies trio performed with piano, and Mrs. C. E. Greer delivered a "Message to Old Settlers" recounting the society formed in 1874. The program noted early settlers near the Iowa river mills and mentioned Rotary club plans for 75-year and 95-year members, including Miss Amanda Walton, 95, still living on a Secor farm.

Principles of old settlers inspire modern life and farming
Mrs. Greer urged divine guidance for settlers in today’s world and Fred Stover of Iowa Farmers Union contrasted two concepts in practice exploitation and creative impulse. He defended land ownership, family farming, free speech, and domestic agriculture funding while warning civil rights dangers and urging adoption of old settlers values. A large assembly and a read letter from former president Grant Tyler were noted.
