Editor weighs pageants policy after Edmonds winner
The Enterprise faced a dilemma over publishing a six year old Jessica Cree’s pageant win. They chose to print her photo in Lynnwood and Edmonds editions but withheld the pageant name to avoid promoting the industry. The piece notes high entry fees and promoter profits, urging focus on more constructive uses for parental money.

Centennial Center on ballot for arts plan in Snohomish area
The Public Action for Cultural Center sought a district to fund a 3,000 seat auditorium on Edmonds Community College property. A boosted interlocal agency formed in 1978 aimed for a 1,000 seat stage later expanding, but funding remained a hurdle. In 1982 a state law allowed arts districts, with no tax power, requiring voter approval for funding. The South County Cultural Arts District formed in 1983, later dropping a convention center plan and selecting Edmonds Community College for the site pending a Sept 16 bond vote.

Arts District settles on Edmonds CC site for arts center
The Arts District Board voted unanimously to place the proposed South County performing arts center at Edmonds Community College, after months of deadlock between two final site options. Consultants favored Lynnwood High soccer field, but the college’s commitment to fund maintenance and operation tipped the balance, with total costs around 19 million dollars and a 1989 opening target linked to state centennial celebrations.
