Sponge first birth control option gains cautious support
A new contraceptive sponge named Today, priced at $1 and sold in drug stores, draws skeptical but hopeful reactions from area family planning groups. The polyurethane device, soaked with spermicide, blocks the cervix, absorbs semen, and kills sperm, with trials in 1600 women showing about a 15 percent failure rate. Critics flag potential cancer-causing substances and toxicity concerns, while officials note FDA approval and clinic plans.
