Afghan Fighters Seek Treatment Then Return to Battle
Afghan refugees Mohammad Kasim and Dr Farooq Mirrani arrived for medical care in Edmonds and plan to return to Afghanistan to fight Soviets. They stay with Freedom International director David Montgomery who coordinates with the Intergovernmental Committee for Migration. Mirrani, once jailed and tortured in Afghanistan, hopes to regain health and aid refugees and fighters in Pakistan. Kasim fought near his village in 1985, wounded by a Soviet shell, then sent to Pakistan where he joined the rebel effort. Freedom International seeks more donations and host housing as it expands its Afghan refugee program.

Officials push for early light rail despite 2020 target
A PSCOG survey shows 80 percent of 150 Snohomish King Pierce and Kitsap officials favor starting light rail within a decade. The plan aims to finish by 2000, conflicting with the council’s prior 2020 target. Bellevue's withdrawal could hasten progress on the North Sound rail project.
