Solar greenhouse boosts Lynnwood garden and savings
Judy Gardiner reports on Fred and Maryalice Britain whose 11 by 22 foot solar greenhouse in Lynnwood heats their home by circulating sun warmed air. The structure, added to their 18925 66th Place West house, allows beefsteak tomatoes and cucumbers to mature faster and reduces electricity use despite higher rates, with a projected 10 to 15 percent heating savings. Their setup includes storm windows, a fireplace insert, a woodstove, and a west facing orientation to maximize sun exposure and privacy. The Washington Energy Extension Service sponsors a tour of the Britains solar addition on April 23 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Edmonds Lights to Dim Early Amid Glare Complaints
Edmonds Mayor Harve Harrison will have Civic Center playfield lights turned off at 9 p.m. starting May 1 and may replace halogen bulbs with softer, less bright options. The move follows resident complaints of glare penetrating homes and yards along Sixth Avenue, with Sunday night curfews and shields already trialed. Harrison envisions a longer-term Meadowdale sports complex solution, and discussions include donating field lights to the Meadowdale project and pursuing a sandlot style facility.
