Deaf Sermons From Signs Grow At Macon Church

The Rev. James M. Johnston, 25, assistant pastor at the Foursquare Gospel Church in Macon Georgia, preaches Sundays by hand signals for deaf members. He began after noticing deaf attendees listening to Sister Edna Barrett. His sign language sermons let the congregation hear the scripture visually, though hymns are silent. He notes three ways to say Praise the Lord and three for Hallelujah, reflecting both advantage and drawback of the mime-based service.
