Florida Urged to Curb Disaster Costs in 1947
Florida officials and relief agencies warned that the state cannot sustain more hurricanes and floods this year. Red Cross said its $10 million fund is nearly exhausted while $95 249 was spent to rehab 291 South Florida homes. Flood relief from Washington is only $250 000 for Lake Okeechobee Everglades area and full recovery may stretch into next March or April. About 35 representatives from state local and federal bodies plus military and relief groups attended the emergency meeting called by Gov. Millard Caldwell.
