Auburn reports two reasons for cutting cotton stalks after harvest. Cutting kills stalks to mulch ground and promote decay, aiding spring burial. It also removes food and hiding places for boll weevils, reducing hibernation survival. A heavy stalk cutter is advised to avoid excess soil disturbance.
Auburn experts urge inspecting all farm animals for parasites before winter. Check cattle for lice and ticks and hogs for mange. Poultry houses should be mite free. Parasites multiply in cold quarters, harming condition and health. Horses and mules can be treated.
The notice urges giving cattle first back dustings or spray for warbles while ewes and sows should be treated for nodular worms. It recommends thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting winter quarters during parasite treatment to cut parasite numbers and protect animal health and production.
The Dothan Girl Scout Council announced two training tracks for leaders. Intermediate leaders begin Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Girl Scout Office with sessions on troop organization records and future dates in November and December. Brownie leaders start Friday November 23 at the office with similar topics, except final class on recreational aids. An invitation was extended to youth workers from other organizations in Dothan.
